Field monitoring and Instrumentation

As with Oceanographers, wider community of scientists would likely benefit from a central source of information that encompasses not only a description of the mathematical methods but also considers some of the practical aspects of data analyses. It is this synthesis between theoretical insight and the logistical limitations of real data measurements that is a primarily goal of physical oceanographic research Field monitoring and Instrumentation group. The group is competent with the specialized instruments, deployment and retrieval of these instruments at sea. The group is well versed with measurements, calibration, processing and interpretation of geophysical data. The physical parameters such as temperature, salinity etc., current measurements, water quality and underwater measurements of the local and regional sea are acquired for research purposes. Water samples are collected in the local sea for analyzing the biological and chemical parameters.

Specialized in operating, acquiring and processing of the following instruments:

  • Idronaut CTD, Falmouth ICTD, YSI multiparameter sonde probes for measuring physical parameters.

  • Acrobat : A towed CTD for measuring physical parameters.

  • Sontek ADP and Sontek ADV for current measurements at single location, along transects, river discharges, tidal prism.

  • Imagenex Tilt head imager used for side scan and sea bed imageries.

  • Imagenex Profiler for obtaining the profiles of seabed, viz., ripple heights.

  • Gravity corer for sediment samplings.

Projects that are on hand include water quality monitoring and studying of sediment transport.
